Celebrating Leadership in Aging Research: Leanne Jones Joins the Academy of Geroscience

The Academy of Geroscience has inducted sixteen prominent scientists into its ranks in 2026, honoring their exceptional achievements in understanding the biology of aging and its connection to disease.

Established to promote geroscience as a unified field, the Academy unites leading experts focused on uncovering the mechanisms of aging and developing strategies to extend healthy lifespan while combating age-related illnesses. This latest class brings the total membership to over 100 researchers from around the world.

Among the newly elected members is Leanne Jones, PhD, Director of the Bakar Aging Research Institute (BARI) at UCSF, and Professor in the Departments of Anatomy and Medicine (Division of Geriatrics).

A leading stem cell biologist, Jones investigates how stem cells sustain tissue function over time and how aging alters these processes. Her laboratory employs multiple model systems to study stem cell regulation, tissue regeneration, and the decline in regenerative capacity that accompanies aging. These insights are helping shape new approaches to age-related tissue dysfunction.

In her role as BARI Director, Jones spearheads collaborative efforts that integrate basic discovery, clinical research, and translational science to drive innovations in healthy aging at UCSF. As the importance of aging biology grows in tackling major chronic conditions, Jones’s election recognizes her vital contributions to this rapidly advancing field. Her selection reflects the Academy’s dedication to advancing high-impact science that benefits human health.

Congratulations to Leanne Jones and all members of the 2026 class on this well-earned distinction.
